Live Your Music – Interview with Jack Foster III 01/20/16

Hello Everyone,

Jack Foster III was my guest for Live Your Music today! We had fun talking about how he is living his music with his new album JazzRapt, touring with December People, recording with Robert Berry, and playing live performances with other Bay Area bands. I also played a fun song from his new album during the show and we talked and laughed about it.

Jack Foster III has a degree in music composition and theory from Middlebury College in Vermont. He currently plays in several San Francisco Bay Area bands including DreamCycle, The ShowBiz Kidz, Carolina Sunset, and a seasonal holiday band called December People, which plays holiday classics — in the style of various Classic Rock bands.

Jack says he has always been a genre bender, but his latest album covers new terrain. Though still retaining a rock-pop sensibility, JazzRapt moves Jack’s music towards the jazz side of the jazz-rock fusion spectrum.



My husband, Dudley, and I love the illustration on the cover of JazzRapt, Jack's 6th album, partly because it's drawn Phil Frank who was a treasured friend of ours. Jack and I didn't have time to talk about the cover art on the show today so I wanted to mention it here. It's a wonderful, playful, colorful illustration of a band of raptors playing together.

The cover art shows Jack's sense of humor – which is also apparent in the song I played during the show today. The title of the song is Your Purse. As Jack pointed out, it is how men feel when we ask them to hold a purse for us. I love the song! You can hear it during the show and also hear it by clicking here for the JazzRapt album.

Debra Oakland – Living in Courage Online

Over a short 4 years Debra Oakland lost her 21 year old son, her baby girl in the 8th month of pregnancy and both brothers to AIDS. A few years later her father passed away from prostate cancer.

Debra began her life altering path, becoming a writer, courage advocate, and joyful experiencer. She now writes, speaks, and works with Universal Laws & Principles of Love that assist others to live courageously from the inside out.

Debra’s story and passion to assist others to embrace living in courage, has been featured in major media outlets including online TV, radio, magazines, and best-selling books.





Debra is eagerly anticipating the release of her own book Change Your Movie, Change Your Life: 7 Reel Concepts for Courageous Change which will be available on February 17th, 2016. The quote from the book ANAM CARA - A Book of Celtic Wisdom by John O'Donohue, that Debra shared during the show today, was inspiring so I'd like to share part of it here.

"The divine has such passionate creativity and instinct for the fully inhabited life. If you live the life you love, you will receive shelter and blessings. If you allow yourself to be the person you are, then everything will come into rhythm. The shape of each soul is different. There is a secret destiny for each person. When you endeavor to repeat what others have done or force yourself into a preset mold, you betray your individuality. We need to return to the solitude within, to find again the dream with the wonder of a child approaching a threshold of discovery."

During the show I played our own holiday song, Merry Christmas. The music was written by my husband, Dudley. The lyrics were a collaboration by all three of us, including our son Zander. It was recorded in December 2007 by our super-talented friend Robert Berry at Soundtek Studios in Campbell, California.

Also during the show today, we talked about giving the gift of experiences instead of giving traditional gifts for the holidays. One of our favorite experiences over the past years has been seeing December People perform their show A Classic Rock Christmas. The shows feature amazing lighting and classic Christmas carols performed in the style of famous rock groups. They also help benefit the people in the local area by asking attendees to donate canned food to help those in need.

We're looking forward to seeing the new show in Pleasanton, California on Saturday, December 12, 2015. There are two shows that day and we've decided to go to the early show at 2pm. The shows are family friendly and I'm pleased to see that there is an early show in Pleasanton this year!

As we mentioned during the radio show, there will be three shows in Michigan this year on December 18, 19, and 21, 2015. The shows will be in Saginaw, Port Huron, and Grand Rapids. There will also be a show on Friday night on December 25, 2015 in Oroville, California.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, your family, and your friends!!

Because it's a holiday week, I've decided to share links for replays of shows with a few of the many guests I've been thankful to have on my Live Your Music show during this past year. I am also thankful that next week it will be two years since I hosted my very first BlogTalk Radio show!

Chris Austria works for the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda. This haven is home to 48 orphaned chimpanzees that have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. They live on 95 acres of forest habitat. The sanctuary was founded in 1998 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of founding trustees.

Originally from San Francisco, California, Chris has worked with tigers, lions, leopards, birds of prey, and a variety of animals for many years at Marine World Africa U.S.A., Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California and the San Francisco Zoo.

Cristi Earnshaw, The Abundance Whisperer, says, "There is always a major transformation in a room after removing the clutter and then organizing the remaining contents."  She teaches her clients to develop new, empowering habits during the process of working with them. She is a firm believer in removing things that don't carry the 'Love Energy' and has changed how I think about what to keep!

Robert Berry is a recording artist, singer, songwriter, record producer, and owner of Soundtek Studios in Campbell, California.

In addition to his own music, and performing with others, Robert is the creator of a fun holiday rock band called December People that plays classic rock Christmas songs. They perform a series of shows called A Classic Rock Christmas at this time of year.

Shiloh Hobel is a Bay Area native, music industry professional, recording and live performance vocalist, musician, composer and industry award recipient. She's also active with the Grammys and West Coast Songwriters.

Shiloh’s early exposure to music by her musical family, and deep connection with music, inspired her to pursue a career in both the artistic and business management sides of the industry, and has dedicated her passions to supporting arts and education.

Artist Lynn Rae Lowe has lived her life somewhere between the right and left brain with zeal and achievements across many creative disciplines. Her first one-woman art exhibit was as a college sophomore, since then she has received two Niche Awards for creative design, garnered prestigious museum exhibits, as well as having international gallery representation for her colorful and creative art.

Wishing You a Joyful & Fun Holiday Season 12/14/15

 

My birthday is on Christmas Day and I love it. Over the years I've heard many people say, "Oh, you poor thing!" when they hear it — but I love it. Maybe it's because my mom always made me feel great about having my birthday on Christmas. She loved to tell the story about how "Silent Night" was playing when they took her into the delivery room and when she came out with me she heard "Joy to the World." 

 

My mom always made me feel like I was her "Christmas Joy" and it is one of the reasons Joy is my chosen middle name. I also like the name Joy because it reminds me to look for the joy in everything I do, see, hear, and experience. Just hearing the word JOY makes me focus on joy and feel good.

I feel LUCKY to have such a special day as my birthday. I always get to be with my family for my birthday. I am thankful to have my birthday be such a fun holiday and to be able to spend it with people I love.

 

Last year I received a note from my husband that said, “I want to thank you for being born on Christmas. You have re-infused Alex and me with the spirit year after year!”  What a great way to start my day! I left the note up to remind me how my love of the season can help others enjoy it more too.

 

 

My husband, son, and I have written and recorded a beautiful Christmas song. The song is called "Merry Christmas" and was recorded by our treasured friend Robert Berry, owner of Soundtek Studios, in Campbell. My husband, Dudley, sang the song and played guitar. Robert Berry did a masterful job on the keyboards and the recording of the song.

Several years ago, Wayne Dyer sent me a copy of a little book he wrote called “Happy Holidays!” and in the book he talks about how much he loves the holiday season and has lots of reminders of how we can enjoy them more as adults by being more like a child. 

 

Here is a quote from “Happy Holidays!” by Wayne Dyer:

 

"If you can get back to that time of your life when you were a child, enjoying every aspect of this glorious season, you can rid yourself of the 'holiday blues' permanently. As a child, the shopping was something that filled you with excitement, and you were able to ignore the crowds. The time you spent decorating, wrapping, celebrating, worshiping, and being with your family was a pure delight."

 

Children view the holidays as a positive, fun, and joyful time of year. It is possible to change the way you look at the holiday season and have more fun, more joy, and actually look forward to it each year.

 

Here are some reminders that help me feel more joy at this time of year:

 

* Look for ways to make it more fun than ever before

 

* Look for ways to give to others besides buying them expensive gifts

 

* Be thankful for all you have and your ability to give to others

 

* Enjoy the beautiful holiday decorations in the stores

 

* Stop and really look at the holiday lights and enjoy them

 

* Take time to enjoy your shopping experiences

 

* Find something to like about every gift you receive

 

* Allow children's joy and laughter to remind you to lighten up and be playful

 

* Laugh more — watch some funny movies and play games

 

* Enjoy the fantasy of the stories, movies, and decorations

 

* Be willing to be more spontaneous and have flexible plans

 

* Take time to relax and recharge your body, mind, and spirit

 

* Savor your present moments

 

* Create memories that you will treasure

 

* Appreciate the people in your life — enjoy spending time with them

 

* Give the gift of your time and love — and enjoy receiving time and love

 

The common themes for all of the ways of celebrating the Holiday season are time with people you love, a feeling of connection with people who may be far away, gifts of love, and time with people we love. In my opinion the Holiday Season is for giving and receiving the gift of love and having time with the people who matter most to you. 

 

The holiday season is a time for giving, loving, savoring, magic moments, beauty, wonder, believing, receiving, and having fun. It is an opportunity to share the gift of love and create memories that you will treasure. 

 

 

What are your favorite ways to spend your time during the holidays? Do you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa — or a blend of one or more traditions? What reminders would you add to my list? I would love to hear how you enjoy spending the holidays!

Children experience the holidays on a moment by moment basis. They get excited about the decorations, the music, and time spent with their family and friends.

Today I'll be talking about how to feel more joy during the holiday season. I'll be sharing ideas for experiences as gifts and the greatest gift of all - the gift of time with people you love. I'll also be playing a song we've recorded for the holidays.

Happy Holidays - December 2012

December is one of my favorite times of year because I love the beautiful decorations, the colorful lights, and the holiday music. It is a time of year when people are more focused on being kind, taking time to spend with their family and friends, and it is a time to reflect on all we're glad we did this year.

2012 has been quite a year. While it has been like a roller coaster in so many ways it has been a year of accomplishments and celebrations for our family.

Our son, Zander, graduated from Chapman University with a BFA in film production with an emphasis on film editing, moved to Sherman Oaks (near LA and Hollywood), edited a couple of music videos and was hired as an assistant film editor for the ABC TV reality show "Wipeout."

My husband, Dudley, celebrated his 32nd year in his design and photography business, is working on his 3rd album of solo acoustic guitar compositions, and just completed the manuscript for his book "King of the Buskers."

I received my certification as a life coach and am celebrating the second printing of my book "The Art of Living a Life You Love" in addition to reviewing quite a few books and events for Hay House Publishing.

Also, as some of you know, my husband and I celebrated our 30th anniversary this year. Zander, Dudley, and I had a wonderful family celebration vacation on Maui in September.

For the past few years, during the last week of December I've written a list of 25 things I'm glad I did that year. Writing my list helps me remember things I am glad to have done throughout the year. It's easy to forget all we do - the things we've experienced that were fun, that were exciting, and that we feel proud to have accomplished during the year.

I've found that creating this list each December inspires me to begin to imagine what I would love to put on my list at the end of the next year.      

 

Will you join me in writing a list - either on paper or on your computer - of 25 things you're glad you did this year?  As you write your list, begin to consider what would you'd like to have on your list at the end of 2013.     

What are your most cherished dreams? What are your heart's desires? What exciting goals would you like to achieve next year?

Becoming certified as a Life Coach was something that I was inspired to do this year. Luckily I found coach training that felt right for me. I am thankful that I listened to my Inner Voice, Joy, and decided the time had come for me to become a Life Coach.

I am happy to say that I completed my Life Coach training in July, passed the exam, and became a certified professional Life Coach.

I feel like this is something I've been training for my whole life. It goes perfectly with my natural interests and talents.

It feels good to be able to say, "I am a Life Coach. I help people believe in themselves, take time to show up for their dreams, achieve their goals, and love the life they are living."

I enjoy helping my clients focus on their top priorities each week. I ask them questions that help them feel inspired to take the actions on priorities that will create the results they desire.

The December People – What FUN!!!

When I hear the name Robert Berry, I smile. Why? Because he is a treasured friend, one of the most positive people I know, an awesome musician, singer, songwriter, and music producer… and he loves the holiday season. Robert has created an album of fun new rock interpretations of Christmas music with his band the December People!!! 

OK, I have to admit I love Christmas music — I start to play it right after Thanksgiving every year. If you love Christmas music and want something new and fun to hear, you'll want to check out this new album. 

Who are the December People?

They are a band of talented recording and performing artists with a unique concept — they perform well known Christmas songs with a classic rock style.

The band was created by Robert Berry, who has played with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer as 3, as well as Sammy Hagar, Ambrosia, Greg Kihn — and his bands HUSH, Alliance, and The Robert Berry Band. The other members of December People are Gary Pihl the guitarist with Boston who has also played with Sammy Hagar; David Medd, keyboard player for The Tubes and Quicksilver Messenger Service; Mike Vanderhule, drummer and percussionist, from Y&T; and Jack Foster, a solo artist on Musea Records, on guitar.

 

My husband and I were lucky to be able to see — and hear — the album debut concert, which was held on November 13, 2010 in Monterey, CA, by a live feed on the internet.The photos above, and below, are of the concert. One thing we noticed was that these very talented musicians were having fun playing the holiday songs and it was wonderful to watch them perform. 

 

This morning the December People were on NBC TV for the San Jose Holiday parade. They played a medley of songs from the album. They looked happy, joyful, and sounded fantastic. The float looked great and the energy of the band plus dancing elves and santas added to the magic.

If you would like to see them live, they will be performing Friday, December 10, 2010 at The Avalon in Santa Clara, CA for the KFOX Can Jam. The doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7 pm. Admission is a $10 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank (per person) or 10 cans of food. For more information, click here.

Wishing You a Joyful Thanksgiving!

During this holiday week of Thanksgiving I've been thinking about gratitude and how good I feel when I remember to focus on all there is to be grateful for in my life. Are you feeling grateful for the people you have in your life? Do you feel grateful for all of the things you are able to have and do? Feeling gratitude comes from evaluating life in a way that reminds you to notice and appreciate all that is good. I've discovered that asking myself questions is the easiest way to focus on all that is good in my life. 

Following are some questions that help me focus on gratitude:

___ Who do I feel grateful to be?

___ What do I feel grateful to be able to give?

___ What do I feel grateful to receive?

___ What do I feel grateful to have learned?

___ What do I feel grateful to be able to teach?

How do you feel after you ask and answer the gratitude questions above? Do they help you feel more grateful for the people, animals, places, things, and experiences you have in your life? What we focus on is what we feel and the questions help us focus on gratitude.
